The United Nations Environmental Programme gatered a  report in 2010 on Contaminated Water. The report stated then that more people die from polluted & contaminated water than from violence and war. But now a pocket-sized device could possibly save those lives. It’s called the LifeStraw, and this could be your lifeline when you’re miles away from drinkable water.

Bad Water turned into Good Drinking Water

The LifeStraw is a tube which is approx nine inches long and one inch wide, with has a mouthpiece on one end. It has the ability to suck dirty water through the straw — even directly from a contaminated spring—and by the time it reaches your lips, the water is clean. The innovative filtration system weeds out 99.9999%  of waterborne bacteria, including E. coli & salmonella, and 99.9% of waterborne protozoa, including cryptosporidium. What happens if you suck down some unfiltered crypto? You could be wrestling with a bad case of diarrhea, vomiting and fever for a few weeks.

Every purchase of a LifeStraw helps provide LifeStraw Mission water purifiers to schools in developing countries that don’t have ready access to safe drinking water.

This life-saving piece of equipment makes the LifeStraw it possible to have clean water in parts of the world where clean water is hard to come by. It also is a light and convenient piece of gear for hikers. The convenience of lightening the load and not have to carry a gallon of water on the trail.

But how does it work?

Inside every LifeStraw there is a mass of hollow fibers with has pores measuring about 0.2 microns across. These pores have the capability to trap microscopic organisms, but allow the water to come through freely. This makes an extremely efficient micro-filtration device. This isn’t the first LifeStraw design that has developed. It is however, a significant improvement.  The older design styles used iodine to kill bacteria, but had a tendency to leave the water with a nasty taste. This new, chemical-free design can purify much better and approximately 1,000 liters of water before it will need replacing.
